We love these
Newfs....they're great dogs! But. what you see in our photos or when you
visit our home, are the result of hours of training and years of work.
We do our best to breed mentally and physically sound dogs. We put hours
and hours of time into the puppies before they leave our home, attempting
to acclimatize them to as many different situations as we can. We even
begin
house training.
BUT what you do with your puppy once you take it into your home, can shape it for good or bad. Just as it takes time, love, consistent discipline and endless patience to have "good" children, likewise, your Newf puppy is entitled to the same treatment. If you treat it "like a dog", it will behave "like a dog". HOWEVER, if you allow it to be a treasured member of your human family, the results will be a Newf who will be your constant and devoted companion.
Well trained adult newfs are great with children...young puppy newfs are not. They must be taught. Children are fun to chase, to chew on, knock down and pounce on. Clothing makes great pull toys! For children [even those who know better], a puppy is a play thing...ears, tails, whiskers to be pulled; fun to tease with toys and generally annoy. For newfs and children to co-exist well together, both must have mutual respect for the other. You can't expect your newf puppy to put up with teasing and having various body parts probed and pulled, without some type of warning to the child, whether a growl, bite, whatever. MUTUAL RESPECT MUST BE TAUGHT! If you think you want a newf "for the kids", do everyone a favor...buy them a goldfish, hamster, bird...but not a newf or a dog of any description. The goal of a gentle, benevolent newf who is a devoted companion for your family becomes a reality only through training.
NEWFS TAKE TIME...the gentleness and sweet intelligence you see in the eyes of our adult newfs is there through training and care. If the first newf you saw was a filthy, matted mess with flying slime, who knocked you onto your backside, would you still want one? Ungroomed newfs smell vile, and have clumps and tufts instead of smooth, velvet like coats. Keeping an adult newf groomed will take several hours a month, without fail. Grooming MUST begin when the pup is young.
NEWFS TAKE TRAINING...your new puppy needs interaction during the day, bits and pieces of your time, making him part of your life, teaching him proper behavior, keeping him busy. A bored newf will dig up flowers, make craters in your yard, chew whatever is handy, etc. He needs mental stimulation and moderate physical exercise for healthy muscles and bones.
NEWFS ARE BIG...but if you only want a big dog to satisfy your ego. or to show off to your friends, don't buy a newf.
NEWFS ARE MELLOW.. Some are naturally mellow and gentle, quiet and calm. Others are quiet because of health problems, but most are quiet and calm due to consistent, steady training. Many newfs who are not naturally mellow end up in animal shelters because their owners didn't realize it took training from puppy hood for that gentle nature to overpower the puppy wildness....or knew it, but didn't put in the time.
NEWFS ARE RIGHT, EXACTLY RIGHT FOR SOME FAMILIES...no other breed will do. How will you know if this is true for you? Do some soul searching, determine why you think you want a newf. Spend time getting to know the breed, And BREEDERS, before you bring home a puppy. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Be realistic about your expectations and honest about what YOU can offer a newf puppy. Then, go find the best puppy you can, and have a blast.
If we can help you in your search, we're as close as your phone.
